SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium

A long-standing anchor of Darling Harbour, SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium holds more than 700 marine species across some fourteen themed zones. The signature experience is walking through acrylic tunnels while grey nurse sharks and rays glide overhead.
It's also one of very few aquariums in the world to display dugongs, the gentle "sea cows" of northern Australian waters. A chilled penguin habitat, a glass-bottom boat over the reef tank and scheduled talks and feeds fill out a visit — and the more adventurous can even dive with the sharks.

Planning your visit
The aquarium is laid out as a one-way, walk-through route, so you follow a set path from zone to zone rather than doubling back. Most people spend 1.5 to 2 hours end to end, which is enough to linger at the glass tunnels beneath the shark tank and still catch the dugongs and the reef exhibit. Check the day's schedule of talks and feeds when you arrive and plan your pace around them; the dive and feed sessions are the moments the tanks come alive, and they run at fixed times. If you have young children, budget extra time at the Penguin Expedition, which tends to hold their attention longest.
The aquarium sits on Darling Harbour and is an easy walk from Town Hall station, with WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo and Madame Tussauds right beside it. Tickets are usually sold as timed entry, so book online ahead of your visit — especially during school holidays and weekends, when slots fill — and check current prices on the park's own site rather than relying on printed figures. A combo ticket covering the neighbouring attractions is the best value if you plan to see more than one. The whole route is indoor, pram-friendly and step-free, with cafés and toilets on site, which makes it a reliable choice on a rainy or very hot day when outdoor zoos are less comfortable.

Before you go
Yes. Only a handful of dugongs are on public display anywhere in the world, and SEA LIFE is one of the few aquariums to keep them. Both animals here were rescued as orphaned calves and could not be returned to the wild, so this is a rare chance to see the species up close.
Entry is usually timed, so booking online ahead of your visit is the safest approach — particularly during school holidays and on weekends, when slots sell out. Check current prices and available times on the park's own site, and consider a combo ticket if you also plan to visit WILD LIFE next door.
