Symbio Wildlife Park
A family-owned park in leafy gardens on the city's southern edge, known as much for its koalas as its cheetahs.
Opened in 1975 and set across about sixteen acres of gardens just south of the Royal National Park, Symbio is a family-owned park that mixes Australian natives with a curated set of exotics. A splash park and playground sit alongside the exhibits, which makes it an easy full day out with kids.
Koalas are the signature here, with encounters and keeper talks built around them, but the park punches above its size on exotics too — red pandas, cheetahs, meerkats and ring-tailed lemurs all feature. Hands-on sessions and behind-the-scenes experiences are a big part of the appeal.

Planning your visit
Symbio is compact enough to see comfortably in a loop, and most families spend three to four hours here — longer if you book an animal encounter. Arrive earlier in the day if you want the "Breakfast with the Koalas" session, which runs before general admission and is the park's most popular experience. Work the exhibits in a circuit and check the daily board of keeper talks and feeds when you enter, then time your walk so you reach the red pandas, meerkats and cheetahs as their sessions come up. The playground and splash park are useful mid-visit breaks for younger children.
The park is about an hour's drive south of the Sydney CBD, tucked between the city and Wollongong near the Royal National Park. A car is easiest; the nearest station is Helensburgh, but it's a walk or short taxi from there to the gate. Paid animal encounters and behind-the-scenes sessions book out, so reserve those online in advance and check current prices on the park's own site rather than assuming a figure. There's a café and a playground on site and the grounds are pram-friendly, though the gardens are hilly in places; on a wet day the encounters and indoor reptile areas still run, so it isn't a washout.

Yes — it's built with young children in mind. There's a playground and splash park, a café for breaks, and a range of close-up animal encounters and keeper talks pitched at kids. The compact layout keeps walking distances short, and the whole loop is doable in a morning or afternoon.
The Royal National Park sits right next door, and the south-coast beaches are a short drive on, so it's easy to pair the park with a walk or a swim and make a full day of it. If you're driving down from Sydney, both fall naturally along the same southern route.
